The newly built T3 terminal of IGI is the topic of every conversation one can hear these days. The state-of-the-art integrated terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) now claims to be the world’s second-largest as it comes second after Beijing in China. IGIA has become the world’s sixth-largest in terms of capacity. The capacity of airport has also augmented to 60 million passengers this year.
The terminal is constructed with Rs 8,996 crore and boasts of four boarding piers with 48 boarding gates and 78 aerobridges. The terminal has 89 travelators, out of which eight are first-of-its-kind in India. The 118-metre travelator is the longest in Asia. Along with all these unique features, the terminal also has 63 elevators and 31 escalators. The gigantic eight-storied main building housing 168 check-in areas and 90 immigration counters completely spellbind the visitors at bird’s eye view.
One can spot a 60-room hotel, a luxurious lounge meant for industrialists, airline offices, baggage handling area on other floors and two arrival-departure floors. The airport also boast an advanced five-level secure in-line baggage handling system with latest security systems.
As said by an airport officer- T3 is the only terminal in India to handle Airbus A-380, the world’s largest commercial carrier after Hyderabad airport. The hard work of 22000 workers has produced an off the beaten track terminal which is no wonder a sui generis architectural piece. Not only it has enhanced the level of the capital but also given employment to many deserving candidates willing to make a career in airline industry.
Although the project completion date was much earlier, but the delays occurred due to several changes in the original plan made disturbed the schedule. The event of Commonwealth Games has come into the destiny of Delhi as a make over artist and adorned the city with many gigantic stadiums, improved commercial areas, malls, hotels and much more. Although, the local residents faced many problems due to the ongoing construction and dug areas of Delhi. But the fame our capital has earned and achievement our country has benefited with is worth it.
